It's a joy when Allah blesses you with a child.

Children bring happiness and joy, but with that happiness come also trials, tribulations, and great responsibilities. Besides the obvious physical care and love, one of your first responsibilties is to give your child a name that brings and carries honor and has an Islamic meaning as its root.

It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your fathers' names, so give yourselves good names." (Hadith Abu Dawud)

It is important to bear in mind that, just because a name stems from a certain language or culture, this doesn't mean that it has a good Islamic meaning.

In fact, several companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) changed their Arabic names because the meanings of their names carried wicked connotations. For example, a companion called Harb ("war") changed his name to Silm ("peace"), and another called Al-Munba'ith ("one who lies") became Al-Mudtaji' ("one who stands up," i.e. for the truth).

The name given to a child is his/her first gift in life. Choose names that have pleasant and beautiful meanings just as our Prophet (SAW) did.

People name their children to identify them and distinguish them from others. According to a Hadith a child must be named promptly on birth and the name must be meaningful.

"You will be called by your name on the day of judgment"

Yet another reason to choose a name with good meaning. The prophet was very particular about this and always changed names that were derogatory. An example is when he changed the name of a companion from Aasiyah (disobedient) into Jameelah (beautiful).

A child must never be given the name of Allah unless it is compounded with Allah.

According to a Hadith the worst of men on the day of judgement will be one who is called Shahinshah. only Allah Ta'ala is king of kings or Shahinshah; Kingdom belongs to him alone.

Parents must ensure that names they select signify servitude to only Allah and no one else. They must not append bondage even to the name Nabi. Names that connotate love or romance must never be used. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) suggested using names of the Prophets or Abdullah and Abdur Rahman. It is reported He said, "Keep the names of the noble Prophets, Allah loves most the names Abdullah and Abdur Rahman. The most truthful names are Harith and Humam, while the most disliked are Harb and Murrah (war and bitter)."
